A stadium with control over energy – even during the game
In collaboration with Eidsiva, we have delivered a complete battery and control system to Intility Arena – Norways most technologically advanced football stadium. The solution is provided as an Energy-as-a-Service model and enables:
- Peak shaving during matches and events
- Blackout-prevention to ensure stable power supply at critical times
- Behind-the-meter optimalization in daily operations to reduce energy costs
- Participation in flexibility and reserve power markets via Elvia and Statnett
Technical Solution
The system is built with TGN FlexControl as the local control unit, combined with intelligent battery management through TGN Optimize and real-time monitoring via TGN Aggregate. This enables full control of energy flow in real time, predictive optimization based on electricity prices and consumption, as well as seamless participation in flexibility markets.
The battery is automatically activated during high power demand, reducing strain on the grid. This provides significant cost savings for the stadium while also contributing to a more stable power system in the Oslo region.
A Battery with Multiple Roles
- During matches: The system delivers peak shaving and blackout protection to avoid overload and secure power supply during periods of high consumption.
- Day-to-day: Behind-the-meter optimization lowers grid tariffs and ensures more efficient use of energy resources.
- For the grid: The battery provides capacity to local flexibility markets (Elvia) and national reserve power markets (Statnett) – supporting services such as FFR and FCR-N.
Result
Intility Arena not only gains a greener and more resilient energy supply, but also new revenue streams from participation in energy markets – all without investment costs thanks to the EaaS model. At the same time, the stadium is better protected against power outages and price volatility.
